How Do I Know If TMS Is Working?

Oct 22, 2021

Depression affects a significant portion of the population, and people who suffer from depression should undoubtedly get treatment for their condition. However, many patients prefer an alternative to the typical treatment of antidepressant medication.

Instead, many patients opt for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the brain in ways that can create long-term beneficial changes in mood.

How Long Does TMS Take to Work?

Of course, you can’t expect miracles to happen overnight. Most patients won’t see a noticeable difference in symptoms for three to four weeks. Some patients don’t experience a change for weeks after their treatment ends.

It can be difficult to see small changes in the beginning, so the changes can become apparent to third-party outsiders before it becomes obvious to you.

How Do I Know If It’s Working?

You will know if TMS is working if you start to notice small increases in your mood.

It will happen gradually, and it won’t feel monumental at the time. Slowly and surely, you may notice that your increased mood continues to improve over an extended period of time.

You may also notice a lighter feeling. The stress and anxiety that you carried with you from day to day will no longer feel quite so heavy.

Similar to going on a diet, you may not feel the weight drop off right away. However, one day, you will realize that you are indeed lighter and making progress.

How to Get the Best Results

Record Feelings in a Journal

If you record your emotional journey, you may be able to actually see the results more clearly.

Start the journal well before treatment. Continue to record your feelings throughout treatment and a couple of months after treatment.

At that point, you should be able to see a clear answer about whether it has started to make a change or not.

Keep at It

Some patients get frustrated and decide to quit before completing treatment. However, you will get the best results if you finish what you start.

Finish treatment before assuming it’s not working for you.

Stay Positive

While depression makes us feel rather cynical and negative about things, you should do your best to maintain a positive attitude about your treatment. Do your best to separate your depression from your inner dialogue and use that voice to promote a positive mentality.

Even if the treatment doesn’t work for you, there are other options available, so stay positive.
