Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a sub-type of Dementia exhibited by problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Like Dementia proper, Alzheimer’s symptoms usually develop slowly and deteriorate over time, ultimately becoming severe enough to interfere with daily living.

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Alzheimer’s is the most common form/type of Dementia, which is a broad term for memory loss and other cognitive impairments that is serious enough to interfere with daily living. Alzheimer’s Disease comprises 60-80% percent of Dementia cases.

Contrary to historically erroneous information, Alzheimer’s Disease is not a normal condition of aging. While advancing age is the primary risk factor, and the majority of Alzheimer’s sufferers are over 65, it is not simply a disease of old age. Indeed, Approximately 200,000 Americans, under age 65, are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s gets worse over time; it is a progressive disease, such that symptoms gradually increase and worsen over a period of years. In the early stages, memory loss is mild, but in late-stage Alzheimer’s, sufferers entirely lose the ability to maintain a conversation and/or respond to their environment.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. The average life-expectancy is 4-8 years, after diagnosis for those suffering from Alzheimer’s; however, some can live far beyond 8 years, predicated on other factors.

Alzheimer’s has no current cure. There are a few treatments, which are not largely successful in managing symptoms, temporarily.

TMS has proven to be demonstrably effective in arresting and minimizing the symptoms of Dementia, in ways that other interventions have not been able to do.

Recent Alzheimers TMS Research

If we take a look at some of the most recent research on TMS treating Alzheimer’s disease, we see promising results.

After just 2 weeks of TMS treatment, one 2021 study reported significant improvements in verbal learning tests and mini-mental state examinations. The region of the brain targeted with TMS in this study was the left parietal cortex which improved “AD patients’ cognitive function, especially memory.”

Another 2021 study done on cognitive deficient mice found that high-frequency TMS can increase the brain’s “drainage efficiency of the lymphatic system,” and prevent the decline of long-term memory loss.

TMS benefits include:

  • Compelling High Success Rate in reducing Alzheimer’s symptoms
  • Non-Invasive – the treatment is entirely external to the body
  • Non-Sedative – it requires no sedation and is relatively painless
  • Minimal to No Side Effects – it has no side effects in the vast majority of patients
